Hand-carved wooden tikka box from India. This box was made in the 19th century from a single piece of teak wood. The walls are not inserted, but carved out of the wood. The lid is attached with a metal pin and is turned to the side. These boxes are traditionally used to make and store a bright red paste, which is used to dab a dot on the forehead with the finger. These dots are known as bindi and are worn as a sign of protection by Hindus. This tikka box originally contained such colored pigments, the residue of which can sometimes still be found in the small compartments. In keeping with its age, the box bears traces of use and a beautiful natural patina. It`s a shame that this box can`t tell its story, which is now being told in your home. Give it a new meaning, as jewelry storage, a spice jar or simply as an adorable piece of jewelry.
